AIR POLLUTION - 27.11.2019

Cabbies at risk from pollution

Research. A study by King’s College London has looked into professional drivers’ exposure to black carbon, an indicator of diesel engine fumes.

Result. Of the 140 drivers who participated, the average exposure was 4.1 micrograms of black carbon per cubic metre of air while driving, and for taxi drivers it was 6.5. The average at home exposure level was 1.0 microgram.

Tip. Encourage your staff to keep vehicle windows closed to halve the levels of black carbon exposure.

Professional drivers receive four times the exposure to black carbon (from diesel fume) when at work compared with at home. Keeping vehicle windows shut allows air filtration systems to do their job - this will halve exposure.
