Contactless payment limit increase

Uplifted amount. Contactless debit and credit card payments have been around since 2007 and the transaction limit has increased slowly over the years. On 1 April 2020 this was raised to £45. The change had been under consideration prior to the coronavirus outbreak, but it was expedited when a pandemic was declared.

Rollout. The transaction limit increase isn’t automatic; businesses that accept contactless payments will need to implement it in conjunction with their payment terminal software which will need to be updated. That’s going to take some time. There is, however, no upper transaction limit on mobile payments, e.g. Apple pay and Google pay, which are authenticated through biometric technologies.

The transaction limit on contactless payments was increased from £30 to £45 on 1 April 2020. This change won’t be automatic as software on payment terminals will need to be updated to implement the change. Contact your payment merchant for further information.
