Q&A - what paperwork for snow clearance?

Q. How much health and safety documentation do we require regarding snow and ice on our premises?

A. Snow and ice creates a significant risk of slipping and vehicle accidents therefore it’s important to prepare in advance of winter.

Your health and safety policy should note general points of relevance such as who is responsible for maintaining premises and how you undertake risk assessments. Most importantly, you should create a risk assessment which identifies which parts of the premises may be affected and what you plan to do to control the risk (see The next step ). Where your own staff are directly involved, e.g. in clearing snow and ice, they will need to follow a safety procedure (see The next step ). Train staff on its contents and ask them to sign to show the information was received. A gritting plan is also a good idea (see The next step ).

Before there’s snow and ice on your premises create a risk assessment and safety procedure. Train staff on the contents of the safe system of work and get them to sign it.
