SOFTWARE - SERIAL NUMBERS - 30.04.2010

Looking for serial numbers

Serial number lost! Does the following sound familiar: you wish to reinstall a program you bought some time ago or transfer it to a new computer, but you’ve lost the serial number? Annoying to say the least! The serial number is typically found on the box of the application you bought. But you’ve probably thrown it away, or perhaps you downloaded the application and there was no packaging at all.

Help. In some software you can recover the initial serial number - the one you were asked to enter when installing the program or using it for the first time - via the program’s Help menu (check About).

Dedicated tool. However, professional software will generally hide the serial number in order to prevent abuse. The number is hidden in a “key” in the Windows Registry. If this is the case, you can call in the help of a free tool such as SoftKey Revealer (http://sites.google.com/site/cakirbey/softkeyrevealer). It tries to recover the serial numbers and registration codes of the software installed on your computer. The tool searches the Windows Registry for data about more than 700 installed applications. During our test, this worked for, amongst other programs, Windows, Office and WinZip. You can print or save the list. An alternative for SoftKey Revealer is LicenseCrawler (http://www.klinzmann.name/licensecrawler.htm): it returned the same results in our tests, but it lacks a print function.

Games? Finally, to retrieve serial numbers for games you will need a separate tool: GameKey Revealer (http://sites.google.com/site/cakirbey/gamekeyrevealer).

Use the free SoftKey Revealer tool in order to recover the serial numbers and registration codes of the programs installed on your computer.
