Staff photos on social networking sites

Say cheese. As well as posting comments on social networking sites such as Facebook, users can upload photographs and video recordings of themselves and others. They’re also often able to add “tags” showing the names of those individuals who appear in them. The trouble is, not all pictures are flattering; some can even end up being potentially embarrassing for a whole host of reasons (a few too many drinks at the Christmas party, perhaps?).

Avoid the dangers. So it’s worthwhile reminding staff of your rules. But this shouldn’t be just seeking a colleague’s prior permission before they post a picture of them on a social networking site - that approach could still end up bringing your company into disrepute. Instead, make it quite clear that any information about your business, which includes photographs or video recordings of an employee or their colleagues in a workplace setting or at a work-related event, must not be placed anywhere on the Internet and that ignoring this rule will result in disciplinary action being taken.

Like comments, pictures posted on social networking sites can harm your business. So remind staff that any online reference to your business, or its employees, is banned and may result in disciplinary action.
