CORONAVIRUS - 01.10.2021

Coronavirus spot checks still happening

The authorities are still carrying out checks on coronavirus precautions despite the easing of restrictions. Why is this and what can you expect if you’re visited?

Gone but not forgotten. Legal requirements have predominantly been scrapped, but the HSE and local authorities are continuing to carry out visits to businesses. They say that this spot check programme enables them to “check the measures they’ve put in place are in line with UK and devolved government guidance” . A few points stand out from these announcements by the HSE. One is that the term “spot check” implies that the visits are random. However, it’s more likely that inspections will be in response to complaints or outbreaks. The HSE is also taking a fairly hard line about participation in the spot checks, saying “If you receive a call or visit from HSE, you should participate in the spot check as failure to follow current health and safety guidance could lead to enforcement action.” It’s clear from this statement that the “guidance” is not entirely optional. You could find yourself in hot water if you assume it is a “take it or leave it” type of deal (see The next step ).

What’s expected? The HSE wants businesses to be ready to show an inspector the latest risk assessment they have for coronavirus.

Tip. Use our updated Coronavirus Risk Assessment to put together your own document. It’s been adapted to the changed guidelines (see The next step ).

Tip. There are three aspects of coronavirus control which you must ensure are implemented: (1) adequate ventilation; (2) sufficient cleaning; and (3) good hand hygiene. You’re also encouraged to do what you can to limit the number of people that workers are in contact with, e.g. by creating work bubbles, or allowing work from home.

Tip. Good ventilation is where your main focus should lie (see The next step ). Those who ignore this and obsess with face coverings and hand sanitisers will come unstuck.

It seems that the guidelines are being treated as compulsory. Focus on the main issues including workplace ventilation, cleaning and hand hygiene. Use our model to bring your risk assessment up to date.
