Check bunds for contamination

Winter weather. Heavy rain, snow and high winds, which can loosen tree branches, twigs and leaves, can cause exterior bunds to fill up and become contaminated. If this occurs it will damage the integrity of your control measures for containing spillages and could lead to an environmental incident.

Requirements of a bund. It must be able to contain 110% of the volume of the single or largest tank, or 25% of the total, or whichever is higher. There are other requirements relating to pipework, fittings and general integrity. This is all to ensure that any leaks or drips, or larger quantities in a worst-case scenario, are contained. If there is water and debris in the bund you won’t be meeting these requirements.

Tip. Include a visual inspection of your bunds on a weekly basis to make sure that they are free from contamination. If there is water or debris collecting in them, ensure that it’s removed as soon as possible so that the bund will be fully effective if the need arises.

Tip. It’s a good idea to also check that any surface drains haven’t become clogged as this could lead to localised flooding following heavy rainfall.

Bunds are effective in containing spills as long as they are in good condition and free from contamination. Regularly inspect your bunds to ensure they meet the purpose for which they were installed.
